The global gemstone industry is valued at USD 34 billion and projected to reach USD 57 billion by 2033, a compound annual growth rate of nearly 5.8%. Yet fewer than 20% of gemstone certifications are fully digitized, leaving a massive opportunity for transformation.
Porolis, part of the 150-year BP de Silva Group, recognized this gap. With operations across Asia, the Middle East, Russia, and Europe, the group sought to modernize gemstone analysis through AI, photomicrography, and blockchain technology. Their prototypes KRISTA™ and KROMA™ had already solved the hardware challenge: capturing critical attributes like appearance, color grading cues, inclusions, fluorescence, and pleochroism in a portable device.
To bring this innovation to market, Porolis partnered with Fcode Labs, leveraging our expertise in AI-driven product engineering, user experience design, and building scalable cloud platforms to build a digital ecosystem that could redefine gemology.
The partnership led to the development of this amazing, user-friendly and intuitive cloud-based platform that connects these imaging devices together to color grade, classify, tag and treat gemstones with AI, while generating detailed and high-resolution 3D videos.
Even though the KRISTATM and KROMATM devices had cutting-edge capabilities, they suffered from a critical gap: the lack of a user-friendly control interface and a connected digital ecosystem to make them truly ubiquitous.
The timing was urgent. In 2022, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) announced that it would eliminate paper reports entirely by 2025, transitioning to fully digital certification. This industry milestone validated Porolis’ vision and underscored the need to move fast from prototypes to a market-ready platform.

The first step was to transform KRISTATM and KROMATM into tools that felt natural for everyday use. Through design thinking workshops and joint UX design sprints, we designed a touchscreen Windows application that mirrors real-world gemological workflows. Users can now move from scanning to reporting in just a few taps, making gemstone analysis intuitive and efficient.

Our engineering team designed a cloud-native SaaS ecosystem that seamlessly stores, manages, and showcases scanned gemstones. With the myGemVAULTTM for private storage and the Gem Bank for public display, the platform empowers users to manage their collections seamlessly. Integrated subscriptions, in-system payments, and smooth customer support ensure scalability and sustainable monetization.
